Human Resource Management & Organisation Development

Promotions - Impact on the individuals & the Organisation
It all depends on the individual
And it defers from individual to individual
I have seen people who move up the ladder changing their colours to suit their selfish ends and held no firm principles to conduct their day to day activity within & outside the organisations
And there is another minority who always behave in the same way whether they were in a lower cadre and maintained a uniform approach to their principles and beliefs even when they moved from one cadre to another
The uniformity in their thinking and actions is possible only because they had the calibre to reach and remain in high posts even while they joined the lower cadre
They had to join as a labour due to various factors as opportunity constraint, etc
But once they reached the top of Management they held the same views which originally they had long time ago when they started their career
There are still few who when joining a labor job may not have qualities of mature thinking which is a necessity for a person in the top management
But as they rose in the organisation from one stage to another developed the qualities of a good and efficient Manager
Thus there are three major categories
1. There are few people who whether they are in the labor or Managerial posts always think high and have qualities befitting that of a top Management Person
They are the salt of any organisation. They have to be identified and encouraged to go up the ladder
2. There are many people who change their qualities when there is a change in the post they hold and here we have 2 subdivisions
a) Those who change for the better learning & improving themselves with promotions
b) Those who change only their colours & act in selfish ways to reap benefit only for themselves and neglect organisational welfare
3. The third category people are those who by some fortune get promotions but never improve themselves and are a drag to the organisation

  1. Mr.X joined as a subordinate employee
    He was ambitious
He joined evening classes and equipped himself
Worked hard and was sincere in his efforts
He got promoted and joined the management cadre
He learnt from his colleagues and superiors
Was very obedient and inquisitive to ask and learn
He was successful in his career
His status and image got improved in his house among his wife relatives and others
He was very happy that he could reach such a position and retired peacefully and had a happy retired life

Mr.Y joined as a clerical employee
He went about pleasing his bosses and was lucky to have superiors who were happy to use his services for their personal ends
He never worked in the organisation
But worked always for his superiors doing their errands for them and their families
He also got promoted without doing or learning any work
He even went up the ladder higher than Mr.X
He enjoyed a higher post in the Management and was happy with his status in the society as a senior officer of the organisation
But still he continued to do errands for his superiors only

    This is a true incident

Suddenly his only son who was doing his studies in an engineering college had a failure of both the kidneys
And eventhough Mr.Y had enough money and gave his son excellent treatment his son could live only for a few years with a borrowed kidney
His son's death affected him so much that he lamented that God has punished him for having got promotions without any real work in the organisation but exploited the selfish interests of some unscrupulous superiors to get the promotions which another deserving person would have obtained

This was his personal reaction and he lived a life of sorrow and died with a broken heart
